Pitino: I Remember When UConn Struggled To Win Yankee Conference

Sep 28, 2011 11:16 AM

Rick Pitino believes it would be a huge mistake for Connecticut to leave the Big East.

“I almost went to Connecticut, it was Connecticut or UMass,” Pitino told SNY.tv during an exclusive interview Tuesday at Hudson Catholic High School. “I remember when they were struggling to win the Yankee Conference. In all of sports, the greatest building job I’ve seen in my life was done at Connecticut. The Big East has taken them from a Yankee Conference school” to where they are now.

“With that being said, how can you want to leave? Why would you want to leave? My biggest mistake I made in my life is when I left Camelot [Kentucky]” to lead the Boston Celtics in 1997. “They’re leaving Camelot. It’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard of.”

Calhoun Wants UConn To Do What's Best For School

Sep 19, 2011 12:00 PM

Connecticut is in serious discussions to move to the ACC, according to multiple sources.

Jim Calhoun believes the school should keep itself the top priority.

"We have a lot to offer," Calhoun told CBSSports.com on Monday morning. "We're very attractive now. This isn't 25 years ago."

If Connecticut joined the ACC, it would play regular season matchups against the likes of Duke and North Carolina.

"What UConn needs to do is put it head down and take care of UConn," Calhoun said. "Do what's best for us - just like everyone else needs to do what's best for their institution."

Walker Convinced He Can Play Point Guard

Sep 11, 2011 1:41 PM

Scouts questioned if Kemba Walker is a pure point guard, something he doesn't have an issue or concern with.

“I’m a 1 - there’s no question that I am a point guard,’’ said Walker. “I can just score the basketball, that’s it.

“Why can’t I do both? Why can’t I do everything? Pass, score, rebound. That’s what I have been doing my whole life. I’m an all-around player.’’

Walker hasn't had the normal rookie experience of summer league and training with his new franchise.

“It’s been real difficult,’’ he said. “Of course as a rookie, I would love to be with my coach and my teammates.

“I am in contact with some of my teammates, but as far as the coaches, it’s a little frustrating. I would like to start learning new things about the NBA game.

“I’m just looking forward to whenever that time comes. It hasn’t yet [affected me] but it will soon.

“As rookies, we’re all real anxious to play basketball, to get things going. We came here to play basketball and this happened to us. But we’re going to stay strong until we get the best deal possible for everyone, and I’m just counting on my counterparts to do the best job for us.’’
